The Best Zero-Waste Toothpaste

WHAT: Bite Toothpaste Bits

WHY: Plastic is a huge problem. We’re reminded of this fact every day when we’re bombarded with jarring photos of oceans seeped in our plastic cast-offs, which make us feel hopeless and powerless and like nothing matters.

And forcing individual humans--who are busy just trying to earn enough money to support their families while making healthy choices and trying to eat better food and eat less meat because that’s bad for the environment but also get enough protein and get more exercise and make sure their kids eat their vegetables and use non-toxic cleaning products and spend hours googling what even are non-toxic cleaning products—to bear the brunt of the research and difficult decision-making, instead of focusing on the companies who provided us with all this plastic packaging in the first place, only makes things worse.

What a fun post on toothpaste, huh?!

So whenever there is an option that makes these decisions just a bit simpler, we jump at the chance to try it. And Bite is that simple, zero-waste solution when it comes to toothpaste.

Why toothpaste? More than 1 billion plastic toothpaste tubes are thrown out each year, which end up in landfills and the ocean. To go plastic-free, Bite proposes an alternative; toothpaste tablets that come in refillable, reusable glass jars with eco-friendly refills (using compostable pouches and recyclable envelopes and boxes).

We’ll admit—there’s a bit of a learning curve to using Bite. You have to literally BITE down onto a tablet, then start brushing with a wet toothbrush to form a lather.

But we love that they come in a whitening mint, minty charcoal, and berry twist (which they describe as “great for kids”), which are made with all-natural, vegan ingredients. They also offer an eco-friendlier toothbrush made with bamboo-infused polyester bristles (they caution their customers to be wary of toothbrushes claiming to be 100% natural or biodegradable).
