9 Skirts That Look Incredible On Curves

by The Candidly Team

Pants are everything. Dresses are hit and miss. Shorts are…let’s not even get into it.

But what about skirts?

Skirts seem like something that should be so easy and accessible. They pair gloriously with everything we wear. They’re pretty. They’re graceful. They’re fun! They instantly “lift” our overall look into a higher level of chicness.

So…where are the skirts? (Please get this reference.)

We’re not entirely sure why skirts are so bloody difficult to find and then, to actually fit. As much as every woman in possession of any curve (so every woman regardless of weight or height) wants to be free of insecurities, certain things make us feel a bit more “self-conscious” to wear. And so we simply don’t enjoy wearing them.

Skirts can fall into this category when they aren’t cut in a way that takes our natural shape into consideration. Which they should, because our natural shape is something to be celebrated. But this can only be done in clothes we actually love wearing.

And so, we gave ourselves the mission to find the very best in every category of skirt we could possibly want to wear. Many of them we’d discovered over our collective years of incredibly nuanced hunting. But some were new to us.

The only rules were:

  1. They had to be flattering in very specific ways that feel good on every inch they cover.

  2. They had to be well-made. Because the surest sign of an ill-fitting skirt is junky materials and thoughtless construction.

  3. They had to be smoothing, because a good skirt should accentuate the curves we already have and not create entirely new ones by weirdly cutting into our midsection or thighs.

  4. They had to be chic, obviously. But like really, really special and lovely and the exact thing we want to wear to 8,000 occasions.

Here’s what we came up with:

1. The Silky Slip Skirt You Can Wash

Quince Washable Silk Skirt

Not since the leather jacket has a single item made it so easy to look instantly dressed up. A silky slip skirt may honestly be the easiest thing to wear in general. It works with sweaters, tees, and sneaks or tights, coats, and heels. And the cut magically flatters every body type. We’re obsessed with the color selection (and price!) of THIS one, but for a broader size range, we also love THIS one from J.Crew.

Price: $60

2. The Wear-Everywhere Column Skirt

Universal Standard Danube Jersey Skirt

Possibly the biggest no-brainer on this list. A classic stretchy pencil skirt can be the single most flattering thing to slink over our natural curves, but Universal Standard seemingly cracked the code with this one by making it in a sliiiightly thicker fabric, so the smoothing is off the charts. Every inch of this skirt screams comfy/ easy to wear. It works for all the daytime, nighttime, laid-back, and formal things we can think of, and it matches with every single top we own.

Price: $68

3. The Perfect Pleated Skirt

Saks Fifth Avenue COLLECTION Pleated A-Line Midi-Skirt

A pleated skirt is so stunning on curves, we would argue that it’s a staple to any wardrobe. We recognize that this one a bit of an investment, but the reasoning is this: many, many brands that make a pleated skirt get it wrong. They use cheap, shiny fabric, and they somehow cut the folds to make us look much wider than we are. This skirt has gorgeous shape and movement and a perfect amount of spaciousness. It’s truly a treasure you’ll wear forever.

Price: $278

4. The Stretchy Ribbed Midi Skirt

Everlane The Ribbed Knit Skirt

A fitted knit skirt is one of those things that we’re drawn to for its sleek lines and versatility, but we tend to be scared off by fit. This one is brilliantly A-line, high-waisted, and has enough hold and stretch to add max comfort to its flattering silhouette. The gorgeous cut works with sandals or looks especially striking with tights and boots.

Price: $130

5. The Long Maxi Skirt We Dream About

By Anthropologie Pleated Maxi Skirt

There’s something so carefree and chic about a maxi skirt. Aside from being the most flattering thing around, it’s comfortable, graceful, and easy to dress up or down. There’s so much to love about how this skirt looks on, but the pockets are what tipped us over the edge.

Price: $168

6. The Effortlessly Chic and Smoothing Skirt

Reformation Bea Skirt

At this point in our lives, we crave chic, well-cut clothes we can actually breathe in. We love that this skirt is flowy without adding bulk, has structure but also plenty of movement, and doesn’t feel the slightest bit restrictive. We wear it to dress up or throw it on with a cozy sweater and favorite tee. And it comes in extended sizes HERE.

Price: $148

7. The Flowy A-Line Midi

By Anthropologie Sleek A-Line Skirt

We’ve been known to lament how weirdly hard it is to find a well-fitting, extremely pretty, and (naturally) complementary a-line midi skirt. Between the elastic waist and lovely floaty shape, we fell pretty hard for this one. It fits like a dream, but the way it moves is everything. Plus, it goes up to 3X.

Price: $120

8. The Lovely, Linen Springtime skirt

J. Crew Gwyneth Slip Skirt In Linen

They call this one a 90s-inspired skirt but with its elastic waist, light loungewear feel, and perfect fit, we’ll be wearing ours for eternity.

Price: $118

9. The Showstopping Party Skirt

By Anthropologie Ruffled Tulle Midi Skirt

Dresses can be tricky because where a top half can be thrilling, the bottom often disappoints. Or vice versa. A skirt is the clear solution. So when we found this wildly fun, tulle occasion skirt, we got veeeery excited. Wear it with these glorious stilettos (#10) and enjoy swishing your way through any elegant evening.

Price: $158
