11 Ways To Look Young And Make Your Skin Glow That Aren’t Makeup Or Skincare

It all starts with this.

by The Candidly Team

We love effective skincare that ages us backwards. We love natural makeup that makes us glow to the heavens.

But we also just want to wake up in the morning bare-faced with the clearest, smoothest, most radiant skin we can. We spend a lot of time talking about the beauty product piece to this puzzle, so today we’re talking about the health things. The inside things. The ones that provide a foundation to our best skin before we apply foundation.

We’ll keep it brief, because we know an exhaustive list only makes us feel demoralized. And we know you already know some of the things we’re about to say, but some are a surprise, and some are just a reminder of how staying on track with our overall internal health can have such rich external rewards.

1. Drizzle on the extra virgin olive oil for suppleness.

There are studies that suggest if your diet is rich in EVOO, it could reduce signs of aging. Olive oil is full of the type of fatty acids we always hear referred to as “healthy,” and they may nourish the skin to help reach pique suppleness.

And listen we know we said “no skincare” and are breaking our own rule on the very first item on this list, but this oil from Furtuna (which uses the most gorgeous quality EVOO) to do make THIS award-winning oil that works some sort of scientifically grounded sorcery in making our skin glow.

2. And put lots of other Omega 3s and Omega 6s on your plate for anti-aging.

Once again, these “healthy fats” could help your skin stay more quenched and possibly offer protection against aging, while fighting inflammation which causes acne and irritation. We hate being told to eat more of something without hearing what foods that something is in so here’s a little Omega 3 highlight reel:

  • Fatty fish (salmon included)

  • Seeds: Chia, flax, and sunflower

  • Nuts: Almonds, walnuts, cashews, peanuts

  • Avocados

  • Olives and olive oil

3. Sip on green tea for clarity.

Green tea is high in polyphenols, a form of antioxidant molecules that research indicates could have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. This could help lower the amount of sebum in your skinwhich is what causes acne.

4. Avoid those long, hot showers to lock in moisture.

Noooo, we hate this one. But our beloved piping hot showers can apparently strip our skin of its natural oils and make it dryer, itchier, and more irritated.

5. Use a clean towel for your face (every time) to stop breaking out.

Are we verging into skincare or can we file this under hygiene? Our towels collect a grotesque amount of bacteria so we recommend having a cute little washcloth set you can switch out every wash then just dump em all in the washing machine at the end of the week.

6. Cut down on sugar and salt to depuff.

Too much salt can lead to water retention and too much sugar can lead to inflammation. So to keep things as calm and smooth as possible, it’s best to limit how much of these things you consume.

7. Walk for that glowy flush.

Brisk walking and moving in general can improve your circulation which leads to that thing we often call our natural gorgeous glow.

6. Let yourself sweat - just wash it off right after.

Exercise is obviously wildly critical to all aspects of health. Sweating is a detoxification process that’s also great. Just make sure you wash the bacteria off once you’re done with a gentle cleanser that doesn’t strip. And if you’re a hardcore athlete THIS brand is making stuff to target post-workout skin.

7. Get your beauty sleep - it’s a real thing - to decrease wrinkles and boost collagen.

Sleep is the time when collagen rebuilds and UV exposure gets repaired, according to Healthline, so don’t deprive yourself of a solid 7-9 hours, my friends. We just need it.

8. Meditate and/or do yoga to keep skin thick and bouncy.

Because of the cortisol it releases, stress is skin’s sworn enemy, halting collagen production, our skin thins and can age more rapidly. Both meditation and yoga have been shown to bring down our havoc-reeking cortisol levels.

9. Eat enough probiotics for a glow that comes from the gut.

There’s an animal study from 2015 that showed that “the feeding of probiotic bacteria to aged mice rapidly induced youthful vitality characterized by thick lustrous skin and hair.”

10. Prioritize pleasure to maintain skin’s moisture and texture.

Apparently, having an orgasm boosts estrogen levels which can help preserve your collagen levels and help keep wrinkle at bay. It also helps your skin stay hydrated.

11. Don’t smoke or drink to stop premature aging.

Do we even have to say why? These guys are just ways to diminish every aspect of good health.
