The 5 Best Coats At Low, Medium, High Price Points

“Where the ___ is my ___ing coat?” (read in Natalie from Love Actually voice)

by The Candidly Team

If there is a singular item in our closet that has the power to instantaneously transform us from the sweatshirt-wearing, greasy-haired slobs we are 87% of the time to chic, coiffed, intentional lay-dees, it’s the coat. One good coat does absolutely everything.

But why are so many of them so … not good? Why are they stiff and scratchy and restrictive and bulky all at the same time?

We’ve been on a personal quest to find the best coats in every key category of coat. And we found them. All 5 of them! At 3 different price ranges.

And while it might seem wise to always, always invest in a coat, given weather and wear and that a great one is meant to last a lifetime, not every category of coat requires us to spend a fortune. For example, you yourself might be a classic, drapey winter coat person and so, that’s where you’re willing to put your hard-earned dollars. Or you might be a leather jacket lady who has yet to find that perfect shape, effortlessly cool version you’ve been dreaming about since 1993. Obviously, we’re all gonna spend more on the specific things that speak to us, but just because we’re long coat people doesn’t mean we can’t also own a gorgeous leather jacket. And that’s where finding those lower priced gems comes in handy. And none of this really matters anyway because all of the coats on this list are beautiful and impeccable quality at every. single. price point.

Okay, we’ll shut up now. Let’s get to the coats.

1. THE LONG COAT

High:

Jenni Kayne Theodore Coat

This brand is known for their deliciously luxurious cashmere cardigans - the kind we lust after on nights we run cold as we scroll through sneaky Instagram ads that know we run cold. But what’s weird about their oversized, cocooning sweaters is that they’re also someone flattering. So when they crafted a long, relaxed coat, we weren’t surprised that the silhouette and softness were exquisite. Perfect shape. Perfect feel. Perfect long, black, keep-forever coat.

Price: $895

Mid: Aritzia Wilfred

The Only Coat - Wool Cashmere

There is something deeply luxe about this coat. It’s made from Italian soft wool-cashmere. We adore, A-DOOORE that it fits in a way where we can layer enormously thick things under it and still move our arms. And yet, the relaxed silhouette is always chic.

Here it is on our Editor-in-Chief Audie over a sweatshirt and legging:

It comes in a spellbinding series of colors. You could spend $1000 on one designer coat, or you could buy 3 of these in tan, black, and one for fun, and you’ll have the same exact quality but 3 different, flawless coats that now match everything.

Price: $350

Low:

Z Supply Mason Knit Coat

We write about this coat a lot. There just isn’t anything else like it. It’s knit so there’s a softness, a weighted-blanketness about it, and yet, it’s a clean-lined, sophisticated coat that makes all the clothes we wear with it look more expensive. Here you see it in a pretty pattern that makes us feel very wintery and elegant, but it of course comes in solid black, classic camel, and coffee bean (a rich brown), and our goal in life is to own all 4. The sizing is on point but if you’re the kind of person who likes to go wild with extra layers underneath, size up.

It’s warm but not thick. Here’s a pic of one of us in black, so you can see how it falls without making us look wider.

Price: $199

2. THE SHORT COAT

High:

Favorite Daughter The City Blazer

We could throw a lot of flowery words at you here or we could just show you the sleeves. We die for this sleeve. Comes in other colors. Makes any jeans outfits incredible.

Price: $348

Mid:

Quince Double-Faced Merino Wool Draped Collar Short Wrap Coat

Sometimes we prefer not be totally buried away in a coat. Sometimes we want that coat to be more a part of our outfit rather than a layer over it. And so, we need it to be flattering, maybe to have a soft belt that nips our waist instead of hiding it. This coat makes the prettiest hourglass. We like it in gray over long jeans and in black over dresses for when we venture out at night. It’s elegant and easy, which is all we really want.

Like lots of high-end, designer brands, Quince makes beautiful things out of real materials. But they charge about half as much for them. This coat is 100% merino wool and debatably should have been on the low price list. But we didn’t want you thinking it wasn’t a luxury coat through and through.

Price: $180

Low:

Hooever Women's Notched Lapel Wool Coat

Their dead awful, photoshopped photos aside, Amazon does conceal some excellent, staple pieces you woudld never know were from Amazon. This coat with a silky smooth sweater, chic boot, and a scarf that never ends? Foolproof!

Price: $54

3. The TRENCH

High:

Sézane Scott Coat

The gold standard “French woman” trench. It is, quite frankly, le best of le best.

Price: $305

Mid:

Gap Icon Trench Coat

So cool and classic, it makes all our jeans and boring skirts and literal sweats look elegant. Plus, it’s so on sale right now, it should be our low price option.

Price: $168 (though on sale for 50% off at the time of publication)

Low:

Quince Stretch Crepe Trench Coat

Stretch crepe so it doesn’t wrinkle and you feel like you can do cartwheels in it. Amazing, no?

Price: $100

4. The LEATHER JACKET

High:

Madewell Shrunken Zip-Front Jacket in Leather

Does it have all that aloof, edgy, coolness of your traditional leather jacket? Yes. However, it’s somehow also … elegant?!?! And if you want to get to the real specialness of this leather jacket from Madewell, notice the length. It’s jussst cropped enough to make your waist look smaller and your legs look longer. Therefore, it’s exceptional with any of your high-waist pants or jeans.

Also comes in black.

Price: $498

Mid:

Quince 100% Washed Leather Bomber Jacket

Once again, the length is going to change your life. It’s soooo much more flattering than longer versions that swallow you up and make you look wider. In fact, we’re a little obsessed with how this bomber style isn’t too thick or puffy. And, of course, it’s 100% real leather but at a price we can’t quite believe.

Price: $180

Low:

Spanx® Leather-Like Moto Jacket

Okay, it’s not real leather, but that’s actually the whole magic of this jacket, because while it look likes leather, the material is stretchy and flexible and therefore as comfy as it is flattering. Also, it’s  machine washable!

Price: $99

5. THE PUFFER

High: The Great The Reversible Down Treeline Puffer

If you’ve ever fantasized about trodding around the English countryside, crunching leaves in caramel saddle boots before coming in for tea and crumpets, this printed puffer is for you. If none of these words mean anything to you, and you just want to have the prettiest, most original puffer in a thousand-mile radius, this puffer is also for you.

Price: $495

Mid: Splendid x @Cellajaneblog Long Puffer Coat

Few things have the power to be this warming and practical and also still be chic. Also comes in a tan color called toast, and we cannot choose between the two. The price is already excellent but you can use the code CANDIDLY20 to get 20% off.

Price: $138

Low: Quince Lightweight Down Packable Puffer Jacket

Goose down. Water-repellent. Wind-resistant. And $70. No surprise it sells out constantly, so if they have your size/color combo, be swift. Also makes an infallible gift. And sizes in plus HERE.

Price: $70
