The 7 Fall Pieces I Bought From Everlane With My Own Money

Basic? Or….BASIQUE?

by Audie Metcalf

I feel like it matters that I say I bought these things myself because if a brand sends me something and I tell you guys that I like it, maybe I do, but do I like it enough to spend that amount of money on it myself? That’s the real question, isn’t it?

I visit Everlane each fall because their stuff is beautifully made, extremely affordable, and they seem to always think about what women actually want to wear, not some mostly-hideous trend that will make us all feel bad about ourselves.

They’re almost like what we all wish the Gap had become—interesting, flattering, not-boring basics that never go out of style.

I was in the rare position of liking even more pieces than I actually bought, and given how utterly atrocious most clothes in stores are, this was an exciting moment in my life.

If you’re curvy, if you hate most clothes, or if require immense comfort without sacrificing looking cute, these 7 pieces might just be for you.

Let’s begin.

1. THE UTILITY BARREL PANT

I know you’re scared of white-ish pants but if my 42 inch hips can wear them, so can you. These pants are so unbelievably flattering, supremely comfortable, have ZERO waist gap, and because they’re not just a boring black, you can throw on literally any button-down or sweater you already already own, and you’ll look chic. I live in Los Angeles so I can wear sandals basically all year round but how C U T E would this look be with a short boot? And possibly a ludicrously oversized plaid scarf?

Price: $98

2. THE BOXY OXFORD

You know how I said you can throw on a button-down shirt with those pants and you’ll look chic? And here we are! But I must tell you that this button-down in particular has really captured my heart. It’s extremely boxy so I thought it would make me look wide and bulky, but it looks magnificent. It’s a little longer in the back so I left that out of my tuck because I’m pretending to know how to do one of those casual model tucks, but I fear I did it wrong?

It’s so blessedly roomy in the boob and arm, too, and though I got this cheerful pinstripe, I’m going to get it in WHITE too because this might just be the crisp, white shirt we all have in our minds that will magically look good with everything else we own.

Price: $118

3. THE TENCEL™ RELAXED CHINO

I took my hat off which was clearly a horrifying error in judgment, so let’s ignore my rooty hat-head and move on to this profoundly basic outfit. Do I look slightly like a 10-year-old boy? Yes. Is it so basic you’re yawning? Possibly. But I KNEW it was basic when I took the photo which is why I inserted my TikTok trendy Stanley cup that everyone woman over 40 is now required to own. Listen. I’d like to be someone who could wear this outfit, but I think they only exist on Pinterest, but THESE PANTS!? Yes. They’re buttery soft, chino-adjacent trousers that I think will be cute with an oversized blazer and potentially THESE white sneakers. All I know is, they feel almost creamy they’re so soft, they fit like a dream on curves, and when pants actually fit, you buy them.

Price: $118

4. THE ULTRAFINE MERINO RIBBED CARDIGAN

This whisper-thin sweater is the answer to what my entire closet was missing and I didn’t even know it. Lovely over a tank because even though it’s wool, it’s unspeakably soft and not at all itchy. I really thought I was doing something with this only-buttoning-the top-button thing above didn’t I?

So easy and not cumbersome to fling over your shoulders when there’s a chill in the air, like an old person. But a chic old person! I might also get the grey because finding non-itchy wool things is nearly impossible.

Price: $78

5. THE WAY-HIGH® SAILOR JEAN

These are the same jeans I’m wearing as the ones above, but I wanted to show them being worn in an actual real life outfit. Simply put—if you have a hard time with waist-gaping, these are your jeans. They pull up smoothly over the rump, are stretchy but not too tight, and they relax throughout the day. They are amazingly flattering on a thicker leg and even though they’re slightly cropped, they make one’s legs look a mile long—even in very flat shoes as I’m wearing here. They keep selling out so pounce.

Price: $128

6. THE ORGANIC KICK FLARE PANT

The Organic Kick Flare Pant in Size 10 | The Organic Cotton Relaxed Cardigan in Size M | The Puffa Flatform in Size 8 (Note: A similar clog style can be found HERE)

Yes, another pair of pants, but I’m just so shocked at how miraculously they fit! And how gloriously flattering they are. They weirdly sort of boost your butt? And yet because of how much stretch they have, they feel almost like leggings. They come up and fully over the rear end (big butt girls please tell me you know what I’m talking about when pants DON’T do this) but they have zero waist gap.

And even though I am a STUMP in terms of leg-length, this kick-flare is actually quite lengthening, no? I think you need them. They come in 2 other colors which also seem necessary.

Price: $98

7. THE MIDI COTTON SHIRTDRESS

Ok, I am most excited about this one. You guys. Did I just invent something here? Is an open shirtdress worn over a full outfit the TREND OF FALL 2023!? Probably not, but shoudn’t it be? Such a chic way to reap all the butt-covering benefits of a long coat or sweater, but in the form of a shirt. I feel like we will see Diane Keaton stealing this concept in about 3 months. But you heard it here first.

Price: $168

BONUS: THE PIMA MICRO-RIB SCOOP-NECK

This is a cheat because I have owned this Everlane shirt for many years, but they still sell it, and I BEG you to buy it. Beautifully thin ribbing which makes the boobs look pert and perky. And just look at that arm length! It couldn’t be more flattering if it tried.

Price: $40
