How To Get Rid Of Dandruff In 10 Minutes

by Audie Metcalf

I have a sad scalp.

She’s extremely ornery, greasy, yet also flaky. It makes no sense to me.

And whenever I’ve followed the internet’s instructions to “only wash my hair once a week!” my head becomes a sad, stringy wet dog AND my scalp gets even more upset. So. No.

But since I’ve had a lotttt of let’s call it “home time” over this past year and a half, one of my goals for my self care was figuring out, once and for all, how to make my scalp happy and flake-free.

Friends? I’ve done it. And it’s not really that complicated. But it does have to be these exact products, in this exact order. And you will see the magic after ONE USE.

1. Ouai Scalp & Body Scrub

Ok, so this is my essential first step. I scrub this onto my scalp, mostly on the hair line and under the ears. I’ve used an estimated 378 other scrub products for my scalp and they’ve all been too scratchy, too spicy, too burny, or too nothing.

This one has the perfect size of sugar crystals and feels extremely invigorating and almost refreshing on my sad scalp.

Price: $38

2. Briogeo Scalp Revival Stimulating Therapy Massager

This scrubber, when used WITH the scrub above, is truly the secret combination for me. I scrub the ever-loving crap out of my scalp with this baby, so that the sugar crystals can really work their magic.

I’ve tried other scrubbers but this one is by far the most ergonomic, easy to use, and effective. I accidentally left it at home on a mini weekend trip and legitimately got panicky.

Price: $18

3. Jupiter The “Gotta Get” Set

You guys. Guyyyyys. This stuff is truly amazing.

Now listen. I’ve used every drugstore dandruff-adjacent product. Every. Single. One. Some work briefly, some work not at all, but they all tend to irritate my scalp after long term use. Not so with Jupiter. And this is because Jupiter uses Zinc Pyrithione (fancy) to actually treat the underlying cause of dandruff, which is usually extremely oily or irritated scalps.

For your (our) long-term hair goals (which is a sentence I’ve never written but now love), even though super sudsy shampoos feel like they’re “working,” in fact they’re brutalizing our scalps and stripping them of their natural oils, leading to an endless, cyclical hellscape of loving that short-term “clean” feeling, while obliterating your long-term scalp health. WHO KNEW!?

Price: $48

4. Ouai Detox Shampoo

So after that entire spiel above about never using sudsy shampoos, I’m going to immediately contradict myself by recommending this extremely sudsy “detox” shampoo that I use only about twice a month.

I don’t know what’s different about this one, but every time I use it, it’s like I’ve just grown a fresh batch of new hair overnight. There is zero build up, zero static, zero dullness. Just shiny, ultra-clean feeling baby hair.

It also smells like heaven.

Price: $30

And a few styling product bonuses that I’ve tweaked to be sure they’re extremely effective for my hair and never ever contribute to scalp-anger.

  • THIS is my favorite detangler of all time. It’s pricey but I only use two or three squirts after each wash. It smells gorgeous and works magic on quarantine-dreads from profound laziness.

  • I almost never blow-dry my hair anymore because holding hot tools above my head makes me rage, so THIS is the perfect product to sort of scrunch into my hair to create air-dried beachy waves.

  • A teeny tiny drop of THIS on my ends has kept my extremely long, prone-to-split-ends hair looking so shiny and healthy. Even though I’ve only had one haircut in almost two years!
