Eat This Feared Ingredient For Breakfast And You’ll Wake Up With More Energy The Next Day

by The Candidly Team

I’m not trying to say I’m brave or anything, buuuut I am about to use two, yes two, of the most hotly contested words in the otherwise super laid back world of diet and nutrition. Are you ready?

Carbohydrate and breakfast.

You can almost hear the number of cans being cracked open, brimming with data points about keto this and intermittent fasting that. The fair warnings around sugar and processed food. Followed by the age-old A.M. debate of to eat or not to eat.

Rest assured, we’re not actually trying to tell anyone exactly what to eat or when to eat it.

But when we come across solid research on specific things that could benefit our oft-confusing (achy/tired/changing) bodies, we always like to share it. You know, in case it could help your own achy/tired/changing body?

So, here is one, honestly pretty fun, finding we came across from a brand new (2022) study: a breakfast rich in carbohydrates was associated with higher morning alertness.

Yes, study subjects who consumed high complex carb breakfasts felt more awake and alert. But researchers were careful to distinguish a high carb breakfast from one high in sugar, which sadly (and expectedly) has the opposite effect of making people groggy and lethargic. And, of course, people who have glucose issues or diabetes should take different precautions.

So, while this data isn’t exactly permission to make pancakes and pastries a daily indulgence, it’s nice to know the days we go through the trouble to make ourselves a filling breakfast, rich in healthy nutrients that include carbs, we may benefit our very ability to function.

And if you’re a little stumped on what such breakfasts exist, we have a few ideas:

  • For the savory-craving egg lover: Make this utterly delicious, impossibly easy recipe, which involves a certain secret ingredient that yes, you buy at Trader Joes.

  • For those who need something sweet with their coffee: Make this completely indulgent-seeming, yet delightfully healthy chocolate chia pudding, which you can prep the night before and reward yourself in the morning.

  • For those who need variety because “morning” is synonymous with “chaos:” Here are 7 simple, accessible breakfast ideas that incorporate plenty of healthy carbs.

We get that where diet is concerned, new data is always coming our way and that we, as creatures with both minds and bodies, need different things to stay healthy and sane. But if you, like us, have been living through the very confusing clash between a war on carbs and the industrial rise of big-sugar, it’s nice to have an in-between space to do something simple like enjoy our damn breakfast and feel sharp as a result.
