This Is The Skirt That’s Been Missing From Your Life

WHAT: Free People Lowen Midi Skirt

WHY: We recently wrote about how we are all secretly Charlottes, while masquerading as Carries. It felt so good to finally admit it to the world.

And a big part of that realization was because of our deep and abiding love of the full skirt.

Now, Charlotte certainly did not invent the full skirt. Though she may have turned it into something that we can can wear as an everyday piece to feel put together but effortless.

Let’s peruse the icons that came before her. And how she made them so wearable:

A full skirt is the clothing equivalent of coming upon a flower-speckled meadow: pure, humble, surprising, and makes you feel a little bit like you’re living inside of a Disney movie.

So why don’t we wear them more? We’ll tell you why. For some reason, they’re typically only designer and thus, unless you’re ready to spend 4k on a SKIRT, we just don’t really have many options. Most of our favorite “regular” stores don’t carry full skirts and so even if we did dutifully decide we wanted to wear them, we’d usually be out of luck.

Until now.

Because we found one. We found THE one. It isn’t just any full skirt. It’s the most comfortable, flattering, smartly waisted, full skirt of our adult dreams. Which sounds sort of dirty, but it’s not, because our adult dreams are usually just about clothes.

Enter, the Lowen Skirt by none other than Free People, the most misunderstood brand at the mall:

Now, listen. FP’s demographic seems to be Coachella-loving Gen Zrs so please don’t let the many, many midriff-baring photos scare you. We do not wear this skirt paired only with a bra. Or a bikini top. But we do pair it with almost anything in our closet, and it makes us look instantly chic but in that effortless way. And it’s the perfect choice for that slightly fancier dinner you have coming up, or that afternoon lunch with your friends where you want to look put together, or a date night when you want your look to scream elegance while quietly whispering I may look like a lady but I’m still comfortable enough to sit cross-legged in the dark of a movie theater and feel nothing tight or constricting on my body which is, of course, our lifelong raison d’être for our entire wardrobe.

And to help illustrate this point, we have assembled 3 outfits with three different colors of this skirt on a real, live, human, one who does not frequent Coachella.

First up, the all black ensemble. Because we hate black with color, and we hate black with white on top because it makes us look like waiters. And this skirt in black is THE go-to piece for a mindless outfit that actually looks extremely springy and cute:

Next, we have the best way to wear black and white—black on the top, white on the bottom. We recently realized we’ve been stealing that concept since watching Can’t Buy Me Love when she wore THIS. But this skirt in crisp, white poplin is what warm-weather, cottage-core is made of. Made chic though with the minimalist sandals. And you can really see the genius of the waist in this photo—flat on the front for maximum flatness and nipping, and then a stretchy elastic band on the sides and back for full, supreme, pasta-eating comfort.

And finally, the full color blocking moment with the prettiest pink on earth. We recently wrote about the THREE COLORS that make you look younger. And, to no one’s surprise, pink is one of them. We love it with a matching tube top (and, trust us on this, a tube top is actually VERY flattering on thick arms so don’t be scared, but if you can’t go for that, it’s also cute with a white button-down shirt tied at the waist, ditto a denim shirt, or a white tank. People will stop you on the street. It’s just that kind of thing.
