How 7 J. Crew Pieces Look On A Regular Person Vs A Model

With try-on photos. Obviously.

by Audie Metcalf

So many of us lust after clothes online, but it’s difficult to know if they’re actually flattering or if they’re just being worn by a 6-foot-tall Amazonian woman who weighs 98 pounds soaking wet.

And so, I inspected all of the pieces in my J. Crew cart online and trudged into an actual store to try them on—I wanted to see if all of my favorite summer pieces look good on a 5’6” non Amazonian woman who weighs … more than 98 pounds.

Many of them didn’t work. And I didn’t include those photos because I looked truly ghastly and we’re desperate for a brand deal with J. Crew (J. Crew, call me?) but I did feel that these 7 are all winners. Except for one which I’m on the fence about and you’ll have to let me know.

If you only buy one thing from this article, make it #7. So. Good.

Ok, join me in the fitting room…

1. Sailor denim trouser in Blue River wash

J. Crew denim has never been a friend to the curvy gal, but the Sailor Denim Trouser thrillingly has ample room in the butt/thighs—and zero. waist. gap!

2. Collection sequin fringe midi skirt

Does one need a sequin fringe skirt? One does not. But if one had a sequin fringe skirt would one find places to wear it constantly? One would.

3. Pintuck midi dress in drapey organza

Tomato-red is such a joyful color and since I turned 40, I do love a kaftan and dressing for the female gaze, but is it giving maternity? Though a square neckline leaves me breathless!

4. Crochet sailor-collar sweater

The pants say “I grew up in the 80s” and the sweater says “I grew up in Connecticut.” And guess what? Both are true! This crotchet, cotton, giant-collar sweater is such a good transitional piece (is that what fashion people say?) and I bought it instantly.

5. Wide-leg essential pant in linen

Is there a cap on how much linen a single human being should own? Because I think I’m at that cap. But these wide-leg linen pants fit SO WELL. Look at this fit. No waist gap. Roomy in the leg. And they come in so many “colorways.” Also a fashion person word. Why can’t we just say colors?

6. Elena shirtdress in cotton poplin

I think this would have been beautiful as an alt piece of wardrobe for Rachel McAdams in Midnight in Paris but oops, I didn’t wear a bra today, and this feels very busty pour moi. Though the shape and proportions are stunning. And cotton poplin is the greatest material known to (wo)man. And the COMFORT.

7. Gwyneth Pleated Skirt

I saved the best for last. Truly. I already own this skirt in white and black-and-white checked, but this camel is screaming my name. A full skirt with a cinched waist and perfectly placed pleats are the ample-bottomed girl’s dream scenario. They only had a large in store so it’s a hair big but the hourglass shape when the fit is right is b e y o n d. It’s the best thing on this list.
